The incidents occurred on June 25th, 2026, at Igreja Matriz do Sagrado Coração de Jesus in Monte Alegre de Sergipe, Brazil, and on August 4th, 2026, at Paróquia São João Batista in Jeremoabo, Bahia, Brazil.

On the morning of June 25, 2026, during a period of adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, a man with a history of mental disorders invaded the church. He broke sacred images (including one of the Sacred Heart of Jesus), damaged the ambo in the presbytery, and knocked over the monstrance that was exposed on the altar.
No worshippers present were injured. The man also threatened people who tried to restrain him, claiming he was armed and would kill anyone who approached. He was arrested in flagrante shortly afterward. Authorities noted he had a prior criminal history and had previously undergone mental-health-related internment.
The parish led by Padre Diego de Souza Farias and Padre Francisco Luis de Barros Filho suspended all religious programs at the church until June 27, 2026. The Diocese of Propriá condemned the act as vandalism against a sacred space, expressed solidarity with the community, and planned a reparation ceremony during Sunday Mass.

On August 4th, during a Holy Mass celebrated by Padre José Antônio, a man entered the church and defecated in front of the pulpit, near the altar, in full view of the congregation. A parishioner recorded video of the incident.
Reports circulating about the event indicate the man has a mental illness and may not have fully understood his actions. Some reactions called for medical treatment, while others expressed outrage over the desecration of a sacred space during worship. The incident was shared online with speculation, but detailed official statements or outcomes were not reported in major news sources in the country.
Both incidents involved individuals reported to have alleged mental-health issues disrupting Catholic services in northeastern Brazil, causing material damage or profound disrespect in places of worship, though without reported physical injuries to others in either case.
