Orthodox Christians hold annual “March for Normality” to protest Pride parade in Bucharest

#EU #Romania – On Saturday, June 13, 2026, tens of thousands of homosexuals and their supporters took to the streets of Bucharest for the annual “Pride” parade, while Orthodox Christians and conservative political groups staged counter-demonstrations, highlighting both religious and political opposition to the subculture.

Organizers described the Bucharest Pride event, themed “ALL OF US,” as one of the largest in the event’s history, with estimates of around 30,000 to 36,000 participants marching through central Bucharest. Attendees waved rainbow flags, blew whistles, and carried banners to assert and show off to the public their homosexual lifestyle, or support of those lifestyles and liberal sexual norms. The parade occurred amid growing calls for legal recognition of same-sex relationships, which Romania does not currently grant despite EU membership.

The Romanian Orthodox Church had voiced strong opposition in the days leading up to the event. The Patriarchate expressed “pastoral concern” and described the parade as a “provocative and inappropriate act,” particularly given its timing and perceived conflict with Christian values. Church leaders urged believers to pray for the family and avoid confrontation or violence.

In response, hundreds of Orthodox Christians, including priests and monks, participated in public expressions of faith. These protests, called the “Marsul pentru Normalitate” (March for Normality) take place annually on the same day as the Pride parade. Some joined or organized prayer processions through the streets, carrying icons, crosses, and Romanian flags while offering hymns and prayers. In response to this protest, homosexuals and their supporters cursed at, demonstrated profane symbols and communication, and spat at the Christian protesters. Similar protests have occurred in past years and in other eastern European countries to demonstrate opposition to these parades.

Police maintained a heavy presence to ensure security, with no major incidents of violence reported between the groups. Similar dynamics played out in Sofia, Bulgaria, where Pride marchers faced a counter-rally emphasizing Christian values.
