Liverpool Cathedral catches on fire as smoke is seen rising from the top of the tower

#UK #England – There was a fire at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral on Friday, May 1, 2026. Liverpool Cathedral is the UK’s largest cathedral, located on St James’ Mount in Liverpool. Firefighters from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service responded around 2:44–2:50 PM local time after reports of smoke from the top of the tower.

Two fire engines and one aerial appliance attended. The building was evacuated as a precaution, and nearby areas were advised to avoid. he main fire was brought under control quickly (around 3:22 PM, fully extinguished shortly after 5 PM). No major structural damage to the cathedral itself was reported, and there were no injuries.

A brief investigation determined the cause of the fire to be an electrical fault on the top-floor balcony of the tower. This incident received attention online, with some posts speculating about a pattern of church fires in the Europe, but authorities have attributed it to a straightforward electrical issue. A church had caught ablaze in Lorraine, France, not too long ago in the most recent of suspicious fires still under investigation.

No other major church fires in the UK appear to have occurred in the immediate past week (late April to early May 2026) based on news reports. Earlier incidents, such as the February 2026 blaze at a derelict church in Southall, West London (which involved ~70 firefighters and caused significant damage to a historic but unused building), or the 2025 Port Talbot chapel fire, are unrelated.
