The incident occurred as Archbishop Richard Moth of Westminster celebrated the Mass for Life, joined by 14 other bishops from across Great Britain.
The liturgy marked the start of the annual March for Life UK, which later proceeded from the cathedral toward Parliament Square under the theme “Abortion Hurts the Family.” Organizers had advertised a 10:30 a.m. Mass expected to draw a large congregation and an unusually high number of bishops. Attendees described the cathedral as full.
Video recorded inside the building showed a person being led out by staff near the sanctuary while worshippers remained seated. Posts from those present described the action as a disruption of the service. One clip circulated widely among Catholic accounts, prompting comments that the protest targeted a religious gathering rather than a political venue.
The Diocese of Westminster later posted photographs of the Mass proceeding with the bishops and congregation, noting that those present prayed for the defence of human life from conception to natural death. No official statement from cathedral authorities detailing the number of protesters or any arrests was immediately available.
The March for Life UK has grown in recent years, with last year’s event drawing an estimated 10,000 participants. This year’s gathering followed recent parliamentary changes, including the decriminalization of abortion up to birth earlier in 2026. Britain already maintains some of the most liberal abortion laws in Europe. Small groups of counter-protesters have appeared along previous march routes.
