#EU #Ireland – A woman in her fifties was seriously injured on Tuesday morning when a man stabbed her inside Holy Cross Catholic Church in Tramore during the recitation of the Rosary before Mass.
The attack occurred at approximately 9:45 a.m. as around 50 to 60 parishioners gathered in the church for morning prayers ahead of the 10 a.m. service. The victim was in the main body of the church when the assailant approached and stabbed her. Parishioners immediately came to her aid, summoned emergency services, and assisted until paramedics arrived.
The woman was transported to University Hospital Waterford, where she received treatment for serious but non-life-threatening injuries. She remained in stable condition Tuesday evening.
Gardaí responded swiftly and arrested a man in his 30s at a nearby residence shortly after the incident. Officers seized a knife, which was sent for forensic examination. The suspect, described as a local man known in the Tramore area and previously familiar to authorities, was detained at a Garda station in County Waterford under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
Parish priest Father Richard O’Halloran confirmed that the attack took place in full view of many worshippers and described it as random. He praised the quick actions of parishioners and emergency responders. The Diocese of Waterford and Lismore released a statement expressing deep shock over the “violent incident” and offering prayers for the victim’s full recovery. The diocese also commended the courage shown by those present.
Gardaí appealed for witnesses to come forward as investigations continued into the circumstances of the attack. No further details about the suspect’s motive were released.
The incident left the seaside community reeling, with many locals expressing disbelief that such violence could occur in a place of worship. Holy Cross Church remained closed for much of the day as forensic teams examined the scene.
