#USA #NE – A 32-year-old Omaha man was arrested Thursday, July 16th, on felony charges after authorities said he sent a threatening message targeting Columbus Catholic schools and the family of Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen.
Ean Halstead faces charges including terroristic threats and destruction of evidence following an investigation by the Nebraska State Patrol. He was previously arrested on related obstruction charges after a standoff at his apartment.
The incident began on June 29th when Columbus Catholic Schools reported a threatening message submitted through the school’s website. Investigators traced the communication to an Omaha address and identified Halstead as the suspect.
When troopers attempted to contact him, Halstead refused commands, fled into his apartment, and barricaded himself inside for nearly two hours before surrendering. He was initially taken into custody on charges of obstructing a police officer and failing to obey a lawful order.
A search of the apartment yielded electronic devices that, according to authorities, linked Halstead to the threatening message. Prosecutors later added the more serious charges.
“Nebraska law enforcement takes threats against our schools seriously, and the Nebraska State Patrol will continue to use every resource available to protect students, staff, and our communities,” Nebraska State Patrol Superintendent Colonel Bryan Waugh said in a statement.
No injuries were reported, and officials stated there was no active threat to the school or community following the arrest. Halstead’s court appearance and any additional details about a possible motive were not immediately released. The case remains under investigation.
