#Switzerland – Swiss authorities abolished long-standing exemptions for Catholic priests and members of religious orders from mandatory military service, prompting protests from Christian leaders across the country.
The revisions to Switzerland’s military law, which took effect on June 1, 2026, removed automatic exemptions previously granted to clerics. Priests, monks, and other religious personnel who met earlier criteria—such as belonging to recognized communities with formal training—once enjoyed protection from conscription. Under the new rules, those deemed fit for duty now face the same obligations as other Swiss male citizens.
The change affected clergy serving Switzerland’s approximately 2.7 million Catholics, as well as pastors from other major churches. According to army officials, nine clergymen had already been recalled for service shortly after the law took effect. The Swiss Evangelical Network reported that additional exemption requests were expected to be rejected in the coming weeks.
Church representatives voiced strong opposition. Catholic and Protestant leaders warned that forcing priests and religious into military training would disrupt pastoral care, especially during crises or wartime. “How will we manage in times of war and future crises if priests must serve in the army?” one church statement asked. Critics described the decision as a form of “state self-secularization.”
Switzerland maintains a system of compulsory military service for men, with options for civilian service or payment of an exemption tax for those who do not serve. The previous clergy exemption dated back decades and formed part of the country’s framework for recognized religious communities.
Supporters of the reform argued that the exemptions had been open to abuse, including cases where individuals obtained quick online credentials to avoid service. The government maintained that the updated law promoted equality among citizens while preserving national defence readiness.
