#USA #PA – A large fire tore through the former Grandview United Presbyterian Church in the Mount Washington neighborhood on Tuesday evening, July 8, 2026, reducing the longtime community landmark to rubble and leaving neighbors mourning its loss.
Flames erupted around 6 p.m. along the 300 block of Grandview Avenue near Kearsarge Street. Firefighters battled the three-alarm blaze for hours, bringing it under control by approximately 9 p.m. Crews returned to the scene the following day to extinguish remaining hotspots in the heavily damaged structure, which authorities later condemned.
The building, originally constructed in the 1850s and rebuilt in the early 1900s, had stood for more than 100 years but sat vacant since the congregation closed at the end of 2022. It had fallen into disrepair in recent years, with crumbling bricks and a deteriorating facade.
Thick black smoke and intense flames visible from surrounding streets drew onlookers and prompted a strong response from Pittsburgh fire crews. The fire gutted large sections of the church, leaving charred debris, collapsed roofing, shattered stained-glass windows, and unstable walls.
Police arrested a suspect at the scene. Authorities identified him as Colton Normand, a 23-year-old from Boise, Idaho, who had reportedly been squatting in the abandoned building. He faced initial charges of trespassing and obstruction after allegedly running through fire hoses toward the burning structure. Investigators continued to examine his potential connection to the fire’s origin.
Local residents expressed shock and sorrow over the destruction of the neighborhood fixture. Some recalled personal milestones, such as weddings held there decades earlier. A local businessman had proposed redeveloping the site into multi-story condominiums prior to the fire, but the building’s future remained unclear in the immediate aftermath. Demolition of the remains appeared imminent.
The Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire and police continued their investigation into the cause Tuesday night. No injuries were reported among firefighters or civilians.
