Bishop intervenes as Dutch teen excluded from Sacrament for dismissing homosexual event as ‘nonsense’

#EU #Netherlands – A Catholic teenage boy in the Diocese of ‘s-Hertogenbosch was removed from preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation after he described Purple Friday, a local pro-homosexual inclusive initiative, as “nonsense” and expressed a preference for a sports team flag over a rainbow flag at his parish.

Auxiliary Bishop Rob Mutsaerts learned of the exclusion during a Confirmation visit to the parish, which flew a rainbow flag and described itself as an “inclusive,” “LGBTQ church,” or “Rainbow Church.” The bishop later confirmed the boy at another parish one week afterwards.

According to Bishop Mutsaerts’ account on his blog dated April 29, 2026, he arrived at the parish for the Confirmation ceremony and noticed the rainbow flag outside. Before the entrance procession, he asked one of the boys what he thought of it. The teenager shrugged and replied that he would rather see a PSV football flag hanging there.

After Mass, parishioners informed the bishop that the parish identified as a gay-friendly “Rainbow Church.” Mutsaerts later discovered that one boy had been asked to withdraw from Confirmation preparation specifically because he had dismissed Purple Friday — a Dutch gay awareness event — as nonsense.

“A boy with an opinion and character. Apparently, that doesn’t fit in this tolerant, non-exclusionary, inclusive, broad, open, accessible, hospitable, generous, welcoming, open-minded, understanding, and accepting parish,” Mutsaerts wrote, highlighting the irony of the self-described inclusive parish excluding the youth.

The incident, which gained attention through Catholic media outlets in mid-May 2026, underscored ongoing tensions in parts of the Church between traditional doctrine on sexuality and efforts to promote inclusivity through symbols like rainbow flags.

Bishop Mutsaerts, known for defending orthodox Catholic teaching, has previously criticized aspects of Church documents and initiatives perceived as softening stances on issues like blessings for same-sex couples. He suffered serious injuries in a car accident earlier in 2026 but had recovered sufficiently to continue his duties.

The event highlighted broader debates within European Catholicism, where some parishes and dioceses emphasize outreach to gay communities while others warn against what they see as ideological overreach conflicting with longstanding moral teachings. No official statement from the diocese or the parish directly addressing the boy’s exclusion was immediately available in reports.
