Canadian United Church community promotes pro-euthanasia information session to congregants

#Canada #BC – Gilmore Park United Church in Richmond, British Columbia, promoted an information session on Canada’s assisted suicide program (colloquially known as “Medical Assistance in Dying” or “MAiD”).

The church community planned a “Twilight Talks” event titled “Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD)” for Wednesday, May 6, 2026, 6:30–8 PM. Guests were from the “MAiD Family Support Society” (a pro-euthanasia advocacy group). A sign outside the church invited people to “Learn about” assisted suicide and bring questions/family members. The event was framed as an informational/community discussion.

The event drew sharp criticism, including from U.S. Christian musician Sean Feucht, who called out the church for promoting suicide. The event was cancelled after public backlash. A related Facebook post noted it was called off the day before.

Rebel News reporter Drea Humphrey first highlighted this event with photos of the sign.

Critics online showed strong negative reactions, with many calling it “disgusting,” anti-Christian, and “wolves in sheep’s clothing.” Critics linked it to Canada’s expanding MAiD program (already one of the world’s most permissive, with thousands of deaths annually and planned expansions to mental illness cases).

The United Church of Canada has taken a more open/nuanced stance on assisted suicide compared to Catholic or evangelical groups. They have made statements emphasizing personal choice, palliative care, and relational ethics, without a blanket prohibition. Gilmore Park United Church has described itself as welcoming and inclusive. It has previously hosted discussions on mortality and assisted suicide.
