#UK #London – Thousands of activists marched through central London on Saturday, September 5th, 2026, in the annual March for Life UK demonstration, calling for tighter restrictions on abortion while counter-protesters gathered nearby to disrupt the anti-abortion demonstration.
The event, organized by March For Life UK, began at the Emmanuel Centre in Westminster and proceeded to Parliament Square. Participants included families, young people and religious leaders. Fifteen Catholic bishops joined after celebrating Mass that morning at Westminster Cathedral, which was disrupted by pro-abortion protesters who were physically removed. Organizers had expected a turnout similar to or larger than the previous year’s gathering of about 10,000 people.
The march took place amid ongoing debate over abortion law in England, Scotland and Wales. Anti-abortion campaigners opposed legislation creating buffer zones around clinics and hospitals that restrict certain activities near those sites. Under current law, abortions are generally permitted up to 24 weeks under specified conditions.
March For Life organizer Ben Thatcher described legal abortion as “an absolute travesty that a human life that’s made in the image of God can be ended and can be dressed up in this slogan of ‘abortion is healthcare.’”
Hundreds of pro-abortion demonstrators held a counter-rally in Parliament Square, organized by Abortion Rights UK and backed by campaign groups and unions. They chanted slogans including “abortion is a human right,” “not the church, not the state, we decide our own fate,” “Christian fascists go away,” “keep your rosaries off our ovaries,” “pro-life, that’s a lie, you don’t care if women die,” and “our bodies, our choice.” Some surrounded a small group from CBR UK that displayed large images of fetuses. Speakers at the counter-rally warned of threats to bodily autonomy.
Before the main march, pro-life activist Ruth Price encountered anger from counter-protesters outside the Emmanuel Centre after she tried to distribute leaflets. Price later said she “wanted to speak to people who are murdering young children” and added that she “certainly meant no harm to them.” Cambridge student and pro-choice activist Tilly Middlehurst told reporters she attended “to safeguard our rights as women” and to show that pro-life marchers “are a minority.”
Toward the end of the day in Parliament Square, video circulated of a brief physical altercation. Christian activist Thomas Moffitt, known online as Young Bob, said a supporter wanted a photograph with a Jesus Christ flag when a counter-protester took the flag. Moffitt said he tried to retrieve it and was then arrested on suspicion of assault. He was held for several hours and released. He also claimed his camera equipment was taken during the incident. Freelance video journalist Urban Pictures described “clashes” and “scuffles” between pro-abortion protesters and others, noting at least one arrest.
The Metropolitan Police had not issued a public statement specifically addressing the March for Life or the detention by Sunday afternoon. Mainstream news reports published the same day and the following morning focused on turnout, speeches and chants and did not describe the event as ending in widespread violence or large-scale police intervention.
