Roman Catholic Bishop Osório Citora Afonso shot dead in Mozambique residence

#Mozambique – Bishop Osório Citora Afonso, the 54-year-old Bishop of Quelimane and a member of the Consolata Missionaries, was fatally shot in the chest early on June 6, 2026, at his episcopal residence in central Mozambique.

Authorities discovered his body in a corridor of the residence in the early morning hours. According to initial reports from Mozambique’s National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC), an undetermined number of assailants scaled the walls of the building, disabled the security system, and entered the premises before opening fire. The bishop suffered a single gunshot wound, reportedly from a modernized AKM (Kalashnikov-type) rifle.

SERNIC spokesperson Maximino Amílcar described the incident as a murder by gunshot and confirmed that no suspects had been identified and the motive remained unclear. The investigation continued as of June 7.

Bishop Afonso, born on May 6, 1972, served as a professed member of the Order of the Consolata Missionaries. He previously worked as auxiliary bishop of Maputo and held various missionary assignments in Congo and Italy. Pope Leo XIV appointed him Bishop of Quelimane on July 25, 2025; he was installed on August 31, 2025, and also served as Apostolic Administrator of Beira. He earned recognition for promoting peace and speaking out against terrorism and instability in the region.

The killing sent shockwaves through Mozambique’s Catholic community. Archbishop Inácio Saúre of Nampula, president of the Mozambique Episcopal Conference, stated that the bishop was found “lifeless and in strange circumstances that have yet to be clarified.” He called for serenity, faith, and fraternal solidarity.

Pope Leo XIV expressed deep sorrow over the “serious act of violence.” Vatican statements and messages from the Dicastery for Evangelization highlighted the bishop’s dedication as a zealous pastor and missionary. Mozambique’s President Daniel Chapo and other national leaders also offered tributes.

The death of Bishop Afonso, who had led the Quelimane Diocese for less than a year, represented a profound loss for the Church in Mozambique. Catholic leaders worldwide joined in mourning and called for prayers for the diocese, justice, and an end to violence in the country.

Anti-Christian attacks are not uncommon in Africa. Earlier this year, radical Islamist insurgents set a church on fire in Mozambique. In Nigeria, hundreds of Christians are massacred in targeted attacks from radical Islamist groups that are associated with ISIS/ISIL.
