Fire devastates Our Lady of Lourdes parish in Flores da Cunha, Brazil, destroying the historic church

#Brazil – A devastating fire ripped through the historic Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Church (Igreja Matriz Nossa Senhora de Lourdes) on Monday afternoon, May 25, 2026, severely damaging the beloved 112-year-old landmark in the heart of this southern Brazilian town.

The blaze erupted around midday while renovation work was underway on the church’s roof and electrical systems. Flames quickly spread through the wooden roof structure, leading to a dramatic partial collapse and sending thick plumes of smoke billowing into the sky. Drone footage captured the intense scene, showing large sections of the roof caved in, with charred debris filling the interior as firefighters battled the inferno.

Emergency crews, including military firefighters and police, responded swiftly to the scene in downtown Flores da Cunha, located in Rio Grande do Sul state. They contained the fire and prevented it from spreading to nearby buildings. No injuries were reported, and no religious services were taking place at the time of the incident, according to Parish Vicar Friar Irineu Trentin.

The church, a spiritual and cultural centerpiece for generations in the Serra Gaúcha region, suffered extensive damage to its roof and interior. Amid the ashes and destruction, however, moments of profound symbolism emerged. Firefighters rescued sacred items, including a statue of the “Cristo Morto” (Dead Christ) that remained intact. In one striking scene, a firefighter retrieved the ciborium containing the Blessed Sacrament (Eucharist) from the tabernacle, which was found untouched by the flames—a detail that has brought comfort and hope to the faithful.

Local authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire, with early indications pointing toward the ongoing renovations. The community has expressed deep sorrow over the loss, but many are already speaking of rebuilding the cherished landmark.

Residents and Catholics worldwide have taken to social media to share prayers and support for Flores da Cunha. The incident marks yet another blow to historic religious sites, underscoring the vulnerability of aging structures during maintenance. As recovery efforts begin, the resilient spirit of the parish and its people remains evident in the face of this tragedy.
