#USA #DC – A fire was reported at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church on the evening of May 8th, 2026. Local firefighters were on the scene almost immediately. The fire occurred after an evening organ concert and reception for the church’s organ re-dedication. No injuries were reported, but the structure itself appeared to have sustained some, although limited, damage.
The parish posted this update on Instagram and Facebook:
“After tonight’s rededication organ concert and reception, there was a small electrical fire in the church. We are grateful that everyone is safe and thankful for the quick response of our local firefighters just down the block! Please keep St. Dominic’s in your prayers.”
The church is one of DC’s oldest Catholic parishes, founded 1852. The current Gothic Revival building was dedicated 1875. A fire station with ladder trucks is located just one block away, which helped contain the incident quickly. Multiple agencies responded, including DC Fire & EMS (DCFD), MPD, and the National Guard.
This fire wasn’t the church’s first incident. In 1885, a boiler-room fire gutted the interior. There was also a roof fire in 1929. The building has survived urban renewal threats in the 1950s–60s as well.
No official cause beyond the church’s statement on the electrical issue has been released yet, and investigations are ongoing. The incident drew alarm on social media as church arson has become increasingly common in Western countries in the last decade. A recent fire in the Liverpool, UK, was also deemed to have been caused by an electrical fire.
