11-year old Catholic School shooting survivor honored with citizen’s award

#USA #Minnesota – 11-year old survivor of the Annunciation school shooting awarded a citizen’s honor from the Congressional Medal of Honor Society for heroism.

Victor Greenawalt received the Citizen Honors Award (specifically as the 2026 Young Hero honoree) from the Congressional Medal of Honor Society on Wednesday, March 25th, in Washington, D.C. Victor was honored as the Young Hero for those 17 and under who show courage in dire situations.

On August 17th, 2025, a school shooting occurred at the Annunciation Catholic School after morning Mass. Victor instinctively threw his body over his classmate and friend, Weston Halsne, to shield him from the bullets. Weston had frozen in fear, and Victor’s quick action directly saved his life. Victor himself was struck by gunfire and injured in the process. The shooting tragically killed 8-year-old Fletcher Merkel and injured another first-grader, David Haeg. The shooter died by suicide at the scene.

Weston later described the moment: “It was really scary… My friend Victor, like, saved me, though. Because he laid on top of me. But he got hit.”

The Citizen Honors program, run by the congressionally chartered organization of living Medal of Honor recipients, celebrates everyday Americans who embody the values of Medal of Honor recipients—selfless courage under extreme pressure. Victor’s act stood out as a profound example of a child risking his own life to save another.

This recognition comes amid broader community reflections on the tragedy, with praise for the bravery shown by both children and adults that day. Many have noted that no child should ever have to demonstrate such heroism, but Victor’s actions saved a life and inspired others.

Victor is described as humble and focused on his friend’s safety rather than seeking attention. His story has been widely covered by outlets like MPR News, CBS Minnesota, ABC News, CNN, and local stations such as KARE 11.
